Abyssea chlorella is grown in glass tubes, using only sunshine and spring water to avoid the environmental contamination that occurs in chlorella grown in outdoor ponds. It is produced in Portugal.

The majority of chlorella consumed worldwide is produced in fermenters or grown in outdoor ponds. This process does not use the photosynthesis of the algae (chlorophyll), on the contrary, the algae develop by consuming the sugar it finds in its environment. This method of production does not preserve all the active principles of seaweed (such as vitamin B12).

Bioaccumulation is the process by which something accumulates compounds faster than it can eliminate them. Any contaminants in the area where chlorella is growing will bioaccumulate into chlorella. This is why it is not a good idea to grow chlorella in open ponds. Glass tube growing is really the only way to ensure a contaminate free process.

Like spirulina, drying is an important step in order to offer a quality product. Drying above 40°C leads to denaturation of the product (loss of vitamins being heat-sensitive).

Their chlorella is referred to as "raw" due to the low-temperature drying temperature.

The question frequently arises whether the Chlorella cell walls must be broken up in some way (in a ball mill, with ultrasound, etc.) to improve their digestibility or other properties. In fact they do not need to be, it is just a marketing gimmick. Various investigations have shown that Chlorella's digestibility is not significantly increased by breaking up its cell walls. The body produces enzymes that are more than capable of breaking down the cell wall of this species of chlorella.
